{"id":5372,"date":"2023-08-22T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-22T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ourlearningjourney.sg\/?p=5372"},"modified":"2023-08-25T03:17:36","modified_gmt":"2023-08-25T03:17:36","slug":"3-lessons-i-learnt-from-the-reggio-emilia-approach-to-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourlearningjourney.sg\/index.php\/2023\/08\/22\/3-lessons-i-learnt-from-the-reggio-emilia-approach-to-education\/","title":{"rendered":"3 lessons I learnt from the Reggio Emilia approach to Education\u00a0\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Eudora Tan&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKnowledge is not a specific destination,\u201d an educator shared in one of the lectures from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reggiochildren.it\/en\/education\/professional-development-in-reggio-emilia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reggio Children Study Group<\/a> in Reggio Emilia, Italy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She explained that knowledge is constructed by each one of us in the context of our relationship between one another and other things. In this world of rapid dissemination of information, it is no longer just about acquiring knowledge but reflecting and making sense of it. It stems from respect, responsibility, and community where learning happens through exploration, discovery, and play.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\n<li><strong>It\u2019s about empowering children to think critically<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>As we gleaned precious insights during the conference sessions and visits to the Reggio Emilia preschools, I learnt that the&nbsp;&#8216;image&nbsp;of the&nbsp;child&#8217;&nbsp;\u2013 as curious, competent and with great potential for development \u2013 empowered the children to reflect and deepen their understanding of what they were curious about. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The children were encouraged to express their observations and thoughts through many ways and also to revisit them and think critically.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Yale University Professor of Psychology Frank Keil, critical thinking is \u201cthe ability to step back and look at what you\u2019re doing, to look at the dimensions of the task, and to evaluate.\u201d&nbsp; It is a life skill that is essentially a constant search for reliable information to help us make decisions, act or even to shape our beliefs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We see this happening in adults but we often overlook the fact that children already possess and continue to hone this skill throughout their lives.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can we continue to encourage curiosity and empower our children to think critically?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Reflective learning lays the ground for deep thinking<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Reggio Emilia schools that we visited, each indoor and outdoor environment is richly equipped with a large array of materials, learning documentation and provocative set-ups to allow for reflective learning to take place.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/ourlearningjourney.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PXL_20230420_065232071-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourlearningjourney.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PXL_20230420_065232071-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ourlearningjourney.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PXL_20230420_065232071-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ourlearningjourney.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PXL_20230420_065232071-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ourlearningjourney.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PXL_20230420_065232071-1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ourlearningjourney.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PXL_20230420_065232071-1-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/ourlearningjourney.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PXL_20230420_065232071-1-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/ourlearningjourney.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PXL_20230420_065232071-1-800x450.jpg 800w, https:\/\/ourlearningjourney.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PXL_20230420_065232071-1-1160x653.jpg 1160w, https:\/\/ourlearningjourney.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PXL_20230420_065232071-1-scaled.jpg 2560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">One of the hands-on workshops where the object of observation and other tools and materials for clay work are beautifully displayed as an invitation to explore deeper.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It lays the groundwork for rich and deep thinking where educators anticipate the multiple ways children will respond and facilitate these reciprocal interactions within the class or small groups.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in an observational drawing activity, the educator may provide every child with the same task and materials, but as the activity progresses and discussions ensue, she would direct a pair of children to new resources (e.g. tracing paper to lay over their drawing) because they discovered something different. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For another pair of children, she may offer new colours or ask them questions about a particular detail. Learning and thinking are processes and surely, not a product. In order to honour that, educators need to bring to light such processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Each class chooses a topic of interest and for a term, most of their learning experiences will revolve around this topic.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As educators, we not only facilitate in-depth discussions and explorations in the classroom, but also plan lessons based on discussions of what the children are curious about. During their exploration, they noticed that butterflies and moths were different. Taking their lead, our teachers provided photographs and books for them to investigate the actual differences.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The children discovered that while there are differences that make butterflies and moths special, there are also similarities.
