Were there times when God’s definition of goodness was different from yours?
I recall when I refused my children’s requests because it was not good or because I had something better to offer, they would often be unhappy and say I was mean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the garden of Eden, God gave Adam and Eve freedom to eat from all the trees except one. But Satan lied to Eve that God was withholding something good from them by not allowing them to touch it. He twisted God’s command and wanted them to doubt God’s goodness. Sadly, they believed in Satan’s lie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
David wrote in Psalm 34, “Taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man who trusts in Him.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
David did not write this when he was a king living in a palace, rather while he was in dire situation, running away from Saul’s persecution. Even then, David trusted that God is good and that “God’s goodness and mercy shall follow” him all his days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus assures us in Matthew 7:11, “If you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more does your Father in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!” <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
God wants to give what is good for us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
God is good, all the time?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this fallen world laden with sins, sickness, deception and violence, God is working all things for the good of those who love Him, to work in us a “far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory”. <\/p>\n\n\n\nPhoto by Unsplash \/ Road Trip with Raj <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
It is easy to say that “God is good!” when we recount something good that has happened in our lives. However, will we still proclaim God\u2019s goodness when our lives are falling apart? When lives are plagued with financial woes, chronic illnesses or conflicts, doubts can creep in and we may start to wonder, “If God is really good, why am I going through so much pain”?<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
When I struggle with recognising God\u2019s goodness in my life, I recall how much God wants to give us what is good to those who ask (Luke:11:11). It is a reminder of how much God loves His children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a mother, even with my imperfect parenting, I am always willing to give the best gifts to my children. I believe it is in the nature of all parents to desire the best for their children, even if our children do not always understand our good intentions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the same way, I forget that God\u2019s goodness is in His nature. I tend to associate God\u2019s goodness with a good life. Hence, I fail to see that God\u2019s very essence is goodness. <\/p>\n\n\n\nPhoto by Unsplash \/ Nagara Oyodo <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
When focusing on pain and suffering, I forget that God desires to bring not only the good but the best into my life. I forget that I have already received the best gift from Him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Out of His loving kindness and goodness, God opens the door for reconciliation through Jesus’ death on the cross so that we can have eternity with Him. This is a gift I don’t deserve.\u202f With this alone, I can confidently proclaim, \u201cGod is good, all the time!\u201d\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Will you trust in God’s goodness for your work, your family and your life? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reflect and Respond:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
1. Do you believe that God is good even when He doesn\u2019t give you what you desire? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. How would you live your life differently knowing that God is good, all the time? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Read with your child: <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Are there times when you asked your mummy or daddy to buy you the latest toy or game and they did not give it to you? Did you pause to think that maybe they did not buy the toy or game because it may not be good for you? Maybe they wanted to give you something better! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
God also wants to give us what is best for us, even if we may not think that it is.
God is a good God who cares for each of us deeply and loves us so much that He sent His son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
